This
class involves the bonding of fine wool to a woven fabric.
The amount of wool used and the type of woven fabric will determine the
texture, weight and suppleness of the finished product.
To begin, students will make sample
to check shrink and scarf weight. All
students will then make a neck scarf. This
will be the bonding of wool to silk fabric and result in a very sheer, supple
accessory. This class will create a
scarf but the procedure can also be applied to yardage, which can be used to cut
pattern size pieces for vests etc. or wall hangings/curtains. Students will choose their individual color(s).
This can be a combination or solid color of fiber and a dyed piece of
silk fabric or pieces of silk with the fiber or a silk/wool blend roving with
out fabric.

Difficulty: NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED
A medium grade of wool is used for the base and cotton gauze is the next layer with dyed pre-felt pattterns as the design on the top. You will then outline your pattern with a contrasting color of wool. The base fiber can be either white or brown. This is a technique doing dry felting with needles and then finishing with the wet felting. All three layers are felted together to form one new fabric. It is a form of Nuno felt that I learned from Mehmet Girgic of Turkey using more fiber for a more substantial end product. He has named the technique "Osman" felt. Design, layout and felting will be completed in class. This technique can be applied to make runners, chair pads, placemats, sofa throws and rugs.
Difficulty: NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED
This class will involve the use of needle felting and wet felting to complete a small wall hanging. Students will chose a pattern design from available samples and reproduce it using fiber and needle felting it into base wool. The entire piece will then be wet felted. Design pattern choices will be given to students. This technique can be used to produce some beautiful wall hangings for the home. Silk noil fabric will be provided to frame the piece and the hand finishing would be completed at home.
